They pull from many sources, condense them into one answer, and — in the best case — name a handful of them. ChatGPT alone reported roughly 900 million weekly active users in early 2026, Google's Gemini app passed a billion monthly users months later, and AI Overviews now reaches over two billion people a month. Your goal shifts accordingly: it's no longer just about ranking first, it's about whether your content makes it into the generated answer at all, and gets attributed to you when it does.
The real difference is the yardstick being used. Search engines rank pages; AI systems extract individual claims. An Ahrefs analysis found that only about 6 to 8% of URLs cited by ChatGPT overlap with Google's top-10 results for the same query, and roughly 80% of ChatGPT's cited URLs don't rank in Google's top 100 at all — citation and ranking are largely separate games. Use exactly one H1 per page, with H2s and H3s nested logically beneath it. Write headings as real questions or clear topics, not clever wordplay — "What does a roof replacement cost?" works better than "Your roof, in the best hands."
Lists and tables are especially valuable to models because they make relationships explicit. Prices, hours, comparisons, step-by-step instructions, and specs belong in structured formats, not buried in running text. A model reads reliably from a table that says package A costs 29 euros and package B costs 49 euros. Pull those same numbers from a paragraph of marketing copy and it will often get them wrong, or miss them entirely.
Keep paragraphs short and focused on one idea each. That reduces the chance that two separate claims get merged incorrectly when a model condenses your page.
Lever 3: Structured data models can rely on
Structured data following the Schema.org standard gives machines your facts in a form they can trust, independent of how the page is laid out. A mismatch between visible text and markup damages trust with both readers and models.
Don't reach for markup to describe things that aren't actually on the page — it should reflect existing content, not invented content. And don't chase every AI-specific file as if it were required: Google has said outright there's no special schema needed for AI features, and a widely cited Ahrefs analysis of roughly 137,000 sites that published an llms.txt file found about 97% saw no measurable referral traffic from it. False or padded markup can cost you more trust than it buys you in visibility.
Lever 4: Make sure AI crawlers can reach your content
A crawler that can't reach your content can't cite it either. Start by checking your robots.txt: are you accidentally blocking AI crawlers like GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, or Google-Extended? This should be a deliberate choice. If you want to show up in AI answers, allow the relevant bots. If you'd rather keep your content out of model training, block them on purpose. Either is legitimate — what matters is that it's a decision, not a leftover from an old configuration. One thing that won't help either way: an llms.txt file. Google's John Mueller has confirmed no Google Search system reads or acts on it, and the data backs that up — almost none of the sites that publish one see any measurable traffic from it.

Trust signals reinforce this further. Name real authors with real qualifications, show a visible last-updated date, and link sources for numbers and claims. AI systems favor sources that look demonstrably well-founded, because that lowers their risk of repeating something wrong.
Mentions beyond your own site count too. An Ahrefs analysis of roughly 75,000 brands found that how often a brand is mentioned across the web correlates with AI citation rate at about 0.664 — roughly three times stronger than the correlation for backlinks alone (about 0.218). Being described consistently in industry directories, trade publications, and partner sites does more for your AI visibility than another round of link building.
Lever 6: Measure what AI systems actually say about you
Optimizing without measuring is just guessing. Test regularly how AI systems talk about you. In ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews, ask the questions your customers would actually ask, and check: are you named? Are the facts right? Is anything important missing? If an important page never gets a hit, you have an accessibility problem, not a content problem. In your web analytics, track referral traffic from Perplexity or ChatGPT as its own source. In B2B and software, the weight shifts toward depth. Whoever explains how a problem actually gets solved, where a solution's limits are, and who it isn't a fit for, hands the AI exactly the distinctions it needs to give a useful answer. Comparison tables, precise definitions, and honest caveats do more work here than any sales pitch, because they contain something genuinely citable.
In retail, structured product data decides the outcome. Availability, dimensions, materials, and price in machine-readable form matter more than brand storytelling. Before you pull every lever at once, figure out which kind of question people in your industry actually put to an AI, and strengthen the one lever that answers exactly that question first.
