Search engine optimization (SEO) is the practice of shaping a website's content, code and inbound links so it ranks higher in the unpaid, organic results of search engines like Google. The point is visibility you don't pay for per click: better titles, cleaner technical structure and pages other sites vouch for through links. SEO is old enough to have its own settled playbook, but the environment it operates in has changed, most searches today still start on Google, and an increasing share never end in a click at all.

Why SEO matters

People overwhelmingly click the first few results of a search and rarely go past page one. Ranking well means your page is in front of someone at the exact moment they're looking for what you offer, with no cost per click. How SEO works

SEO rests on three pillars. On-page optimization is everything on the page itself: clear writing, search terms that match what people actually type, sensible headings and titles. Technical SEO makes sure search engines can crawl and render the page without friction, fast load times, a mobile-friendly layout and a clean URL structure all matter here. Off-page optimization covers signals from elsewhere, chiefly backlinks, other sites linking to yours, which function as a vote of credibility. Search engines discover pages with automated crawlers, add them to an index, and rank them using a large and only partially public set of ranking factors. Get on-page, technical and off-page work aligned, and rankings tend to follow.

Common mistakes

Stuffing a page with search terms is a classic misstep, search engines are good at spotting unnatural repetition and penalize it rather than rewarding it. A related error is writing for the algorithm instead of the reader: content that actually answers a real question, clearly and completely, tends to outperform content engineered to hit a keyword quota. Duplicate content, the same text repeated across multiple pages, causes those pages to compete against each other instead of one page winning cleanly. Technical debt gets underrated too: slow pages, a broken mobile layout or crawlers blocked by a misconfigured robots.txt can quietly cap your rankings no matter how good the writing is. And the most common mistake of all is impatience, SEO typically takes months to show results, and treating it like a one-off project rather than an ongoing practice is a reliable way to waste the early work.

Relation to AI visibility

AI systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews increasingly answer questions directly rather than handing back a list of links, and the two disciplines overlap less than people assume. Ahrefs research found that only 6 to 8% of URLs cited by ChatGPT also rank in Google's top 10 for the same query, and roughly 80% of ChatGPT's citations don't appear in Google's top 100 results at all, meaning citation in an AI answer is a meaningfully different selection process from ranking in search. The overlap that does exist matters, though: Google's AI Overviews now reach over 2 billion monthly users, and Ahrefs found they correlate with a 58% drop in average click-through rate for the page ranking #1 organically, so being cited by name inside the answer is becoming more valuable than the click you used to count on. Google itself is explicit that no special markup or AI-specific files are required for AI Overviews or AI Mode, and warns against writing content "for AI" separately from writing it for people. The page answers the actual question people are searching, uses the terms customers really type, and loads fast on a phone. Within a couple of months it climbs the Google rankings for that query, and a local cycling blog links to it, a backlink that adds credibility in the eyes of both search engines and, potentially, an AI assistant summarizing chain-replacement advice. New customers start finding the shop on their own, without a cent spent on ads.
