The most common mistake is treating an AI assistant like a search engine and optimizing for keywords instead of for clear, fact-rich, citable content. A second is chasing files and markup that don't do anything: Google's own guidance states plainly that no special schema, no llms.txt, and no AI-specific files are required for AI Overviews or AI Mode, and explicitly warns against writing separate content "for AI." That warning is backed by data — Google's John Mueller confirmed in 2025 that no Google Search system reads llms.txt, and an Ahrefs review of roughly 137,000 sites that published one found about 97% saw zero measurable referral traffic from it.
