Anthropic
Anthropic is the US AI lab, founded in 2021 by former OpenAI researchers, that builds the Claude family of large language models. It matters for AI visibility because Claude answers questions directly — in the Claude apps, in Claude Code, and inside the many third-party products built on Anthropic's API — and whichever brands it names in an answer are the ones a user actually sees.
Why Anthropic matters for your visibility
People increasingly put a question to an assistant instead of typing it into a search box. Claude is one of the assistants they use, and because Anthropic exposes its models through an API, Claude also sits quietly inside other companies' products — support widgets, research tools, coding assistants — multiplying the surfaces where it might name a brand. When someone asks Claude "which provider in my area is worth using?", the model has to decide who gets mentioned and who doesn't. That decision is the new version of ranking first on a results page, except there is no page to inspect and no list of runners-up. Generative engine optimization (GEO) — a term formalized in the 2024 ACM SIGKDD paper by Aggarwal, Murahari, Narasimhan, Deshpande, Rajpurohit and Kalyan — is the discipline built around exactly this shift: making your content the kind of evidence a model like Claude reaches for.
How Claude gets information
Claude draws on two sources. One is its training data: a large fixed snapshot of text the model learned from, which goes stale the further you get from its cutoff. The other is live retrieval: in products where web search is enabled, Claude fetches current pages and cites them. Anthropic crawls the web for this with its own bot, ClaudeBot, and separately respects robots.txt rules that block it. Getting cited depends less on any special markup and more on being genuinely legible: a clear heading structure, unambiguous facts stated in plain language, and paragraphs that can be lifted and cited on their own. Structured data such as FAQPage or Article schema can help machines parse a page, but neither Anthropic nor Google treats it as a required or independently proven ranking signal.
Common misconceptions
People often conflate Anthropic with OpenAI. They are separate, competing companies: Anthropic makes Claude, OpenAI makes ChatGPT, and there is no shared ownership or model. A second misconception is that a brand can pay Anthropic for a mention inside Claude's answers — there is no such advertising product; visibility is earned through content Claude can find, trust and cite, not purchased. A third is treating a file like llms.txt as a way to control what Claude or other engines say about you: Google has confirmed no Search system reads or acts on llms.txt, and a large-scale analysis of sites that published one found roughly 97% saw no measurable referral traffic tied to it. And a fourth: assuming Claude always has the latest facts. Without live search enabled, it's reasoning from training data that may already be out of date.
Relevance to AI recommendations
For a business, Anthropic is a recommendation channel, not a footnote. If Claude suggests three providers to a user and yours isn't one of them, you've lost a customer with no visible results list to diagnose why — unlike a Google search, there's nothing to screenshot and audit. This is also a wider trend, not a niche one: Google's Gemini app alone passed a billion monthly users in August 2026, and AI Overviews now reach over two billion monthly users across 200-plus countries, so the audience asking assistants instead of clicking links is no longer small. What moves the needle is measurable: an Ahrefs analysis across roughly 75,000 brands found web-mention frequency correlates with AI citation rate at about 0.664, close to three times the correlation for backlinks (about 0.218) — being talked about accurately across the web outweighs link-building alone.
Example
A small tax firm in Leipzig notices new clients keep saying: "An AI assistant recommended you." Curious, the owner asks Claude directly: "Which tax advisory in Leipzig specializes in freelancers?" Claude names three competitors and not the firm. Looking into it, they find the website never states the specialization in plain text, and robots.txt blocks ClaudeBot outright. They rewrite the page to say clearly what they do and for whom, unblock the crawler, and a few weeks later start turning up in Claude's answers.
Common questions
Is Anthropic the same as OpenAI?
No. Anthropic and OpenAI are independent, competing companies. Anthropic develops the Claude models, OpenAI develops ChatGPT. Both build large language models but have no shared ownership or technology.
Can I pay for Claude to recommend my brand?
No. Anthropic does not sell placement or advertising slots inside Claude's answers. Visibility comes from content that is findable, clearly written and trustworthy enough for Claude to treat as evidence — not from payment.
